The Hubert H. Humphrey Building is a low-rise Brutalist government office building designed by preeminent architect Marcel Breuer and located at the foot of Capitol Hill. In 1976, upon its completion, it became the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. After the department’s education component separated to become part of the U.S. Department of Education in 1979, the newly renamed U.S. Department of Health and Human Services continued to occupy the structure.
Originally known as the South Portal Building, the building was renamed in honor of former Vice President and U.S. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey on November 1, 1977.
