2024 Presidential Transition Directory

This website is designed to help candidates in the 2024 presidential election get quick and easy access to key resources about the federal government structure and key policies related to presidential transition. We are mandated by the Presidential Transition Act of 1963, as amended, to create and publish this directory no later than one year before each presidential election.

Connecting resources from our agency, Office of Personnel Management, National Archives and Records Administration, U.S. Office of Government Ethics, and others, the site will assist future political appointees in gaining a deeper understanding of critical aspects of their roles, as well as important policies and facets of federal service.

We launched the 2024 Presidential Transition Directory on Nov. 1, 2023. We will continuously update the Directory as new information becomes available.

Resources

This directory connects the people helping to plan and design our next federal government with information and resources related to that effort.

• Councils 
  The specific roles and responsibilities of the White House Transition Coordinating Council and the Agency Transition Directors Council.
• Eligible candidates
  Eligible candidates must submit an ethics plan outlining how they will guide their transition, with a focus on implementing and enforcing ethical standards.
• Ethics and accountability
  Ethics and accountability in the presidential transition involve upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and compliance with federal ethics regulations, with oversight and guidance from entities such as the Office of Government Ethics and the Government Accountability Office.
• External transition resources
  Sources and organizations that provide additional perspectives and insights about the election process and the presidential transition.
• Federal government structure
  Resources that provide insight into the Federal Government structure which consists of legislative, executive, and judicial branches, along with numerous agencies, organizations, and positions.
• Records management guidelines
  A framework for the systematic creation, maintenance, and disposal of government and Presidential records to ensure transparency, accountability, and the preservation of important information during the transition of administrations.

1. May 2024

   • Establish transition councils
   • Designate agency transitions leads

2. July 15-18, 2024

   • Republican National Convention

3. Aug. 19-22, 2024

   • Democratic National Convention

4. Aug. 27, 2024

   • Offer eligible candidate(s) transition services and facilities

5. Sept. 1, 2024

   • Execute agreements with eligible candidates, to the maximum extent practicable

6. Sept. 15, 2024

   • Identify acting officers for vacant non-career positions

7. Oct. 1, 2024

   • Eligible candidates’ ethics plan are due

8. Nov. 1, 2024

   • Deadline for agency briefing materials to be finalized

9. Nov. 5, 2024

   • Election Day

10. Nov. 6 - Jan. 20

    • Post-election period (guided by the Presidential Transition Act, as amended in 2022)

11. Jan. 20, 2025
