Under the NHLPA, a historic lighthouse that is no longer needed by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is made available for park, recreational, educational, cultural, or historic preservation purposes to eligible entities defined as:
- Federal agencies
- State and local agencies
- Nonprofit organizations
- Educational agencies or community development organizations
The Stratford Point Lighthouse is a 35-foot-tall cast iron lighthouse facing southeast toward Long Island Sound. The original lighthouse was constructed in 1822. The current lighthouse was constructed in 1881 of prefabricated cast-iron, the first of its kind in Connecticut. The lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
The lighthouse and three buildings are on +/- 0.58-acre parcel. The property, located at 1275 Prospect Drive in Stratford, is currently licensed to the Town of Stratford, Connecticut. It is located approximately 1 mile from Bridgeport-Sikorsky Airport and approximately 4 miles from I-95.
The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation (ATON) operated by the USCG. USCG will reserve access to the property for the purposes of maintaining the ATON after conveyance.
